Epek International is excited to announce our partnership with WaterStep International.

Access to clean water is a major obstacle in many parts of the world. This is highlighted as hand-washing is a significant part of fighting the coronavirus. What do communities with no access to clean water do when they know this is a vital part of staying healthy, but it is just not possible? This is the sanitation crisis issue facing many poor families, street-working children, and displaced people in Afghanistan.

Many water solutions are effective, but not sustainable in communities without infrastructure to run complex water treatment processes.

The WaterStep M-100 Chlorine Generator generates chlorine gas, and can process 10,000 gallons of water in a 24-hour period. It uses salt, a car battery (or battery source that can be solar charged) and that's it.

Our Afghan team in Kabul (bAhem) is considering the many ways to use this equipment to serve and share with their communities.

WaterStep is excited to be expanding our reach into Afghanistan and we look forward to further developing our partnership with Epek International!

Here are specifics of what HAS BEEN accomplished TO-DATE:

• Training at WaterStep of Epek team members on how to use the M-100 Chlorine Generator and Bleachmaker equipment

• Transport of equipment from the US to Kabul after travel restrictions were lifted (Wakil personally went with the equipment)

• Training of WaterStep team in Afghanistan

• Demonstrations of the equipment to community members and government officials in Kabul

• The Epek bAhem group of Afghan volunteers sanitized the 50 schools with which we are connected.

Next Steps:

• Secure funding for additional WaterStep equipment to serve more in the community—hospitals, schools, IDP camps

• Please pray for ways this equipment could be monetized by Afghans to help economic growth and support families (sell bottles of bleach to families, etc.)

The training session (pictured above) was the first in-person class to be held at WaterStep in months. The class size was very small and all participants were socially distanced. Wakil, Epek International Founder & Executive Director, was able to join in the training virtually via Zoom.

WaterStep M-100 Chlorine Generator helps make existing water supplies safe to drink. Using a 12-volt car battery and salt, the M-100 Chlorine Generator simply and safely produces chlorine gas that is injected into the water to kill waterborne pathogens.

WaterStep’s BleachMaker makes a bleach solution to be used as a general purpose disinfectant. The production of a strong effective disinfectant made on site, easily and at a low cost, will promote improved sanitation and hygiene.

Wakil traveled to Afghanistan in October 2020 to take WaterStep products (funded by EPEK supporters) to help schools and communities in Kabul. The need is great and many more people in Kabul can benefit (now more than ever) by WaterStep’s clean water and disinfectant bleach makers. Please consider a gift to help support this life-saving program.
